Carlos entered the Creative Learning program two years ago exhibiting difficulties in finishing his homework and discipline behavior in the classroom.
Since then he has become an active student and gained the ability to sight-read texts in fluent English.
The Creative Learning @ FPC program
Creative Learning provides daily after school tutoring and help with homework to improve the learning skills of students with working parents. The students attend Grades K-5 and come from seven Stamford public schools. Some students are American-born but English is their second language.
All students, especially English language learners, need time to read and process texts and math problems, and to talk about their meaning to others. Daily work with Creative Learning’s tutors enables students to finish their homework without relying solely on their translation abilities or those of their parents. Non-readers become interested book seekers. Math begins to make sense.
Become a sponsor of Creative Learning
Since beginning in 2009 in its downtown urban campus at First Presbyterian Church, Creative Learning has been supported by tax-deductible funds. Our students come from lower-income families where parents work two or more jobs in Stamford. We accept students into the program without regard to race, creed, gender, or color. Seventy percent of the students receive scholarship aid. We rely on sponsors to cover most of the program’s expenses.
