SUMMARY:Tour Day at "The Fish Church"
DESCRIPTION:Docent-led tours of the unique sanctuary\, the magnificent Visser-Rowland organ\, and the 56 bell carillon at the First Presbyterian Church. \nArchitect Wallace K. Harrison asked\, “Have you ever thought what it would be like to live inside a giant sapphire?” With more than 20\,000 pieces of glass in 86 hues\, the dalle de verre of the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford achieves his goal of creating a building with “soaring space and jeweled light.” \nThe sanctuary at the First Presbyterian Church (FPC)\, a National Historic Landmark\, is internationally acclaimed as a masterpiece of modern art and architecture. Inspired by the 13th century Sainte-Chappelle chapel in Paris\, architect Wallace K. Harrison succeeded in his intent to impart the emotional impact of a gothic cathedral in a modern American church. Harrison pioneered the use of dalle de verre glass within the thin shell walls. \nCentrally located in downtown Stamford\, the 7 acre property contains the sanctuary with a Vissor-Rowland mechanical action organ\, a 260 foot 56 bell carillon tower\, administrative and classroom area\, chapel\, memorial garden\, historic wall\, memorial walk\, and Fellowship Hall with a commercial kitchen. The buildings serve many people and organizations. And the large green space at the church is a neighborhood gathering place\, attracting 18\,000 visitors annually. \n  \nThis event is FREE and open to the public! \nA ticket is not required for entry. Tours are led on a first-come\, first-serve basis.

SUMMARY:Autumnal Colors—Music for Cello\, Organ & Harpsichord
DESCRIPTION:In our ongoing partnership with Orchestra Lumos (formerly known as Stamford Symphony)\, cellist Eliot Bailen is our guest soloist\, accompanied by Kevin Bailey on organ and harpsichord. Bailen and Bailey go Baroque\, plus other favorites.  Represented composers include Bach\, Vivaldi\, Amy Beach\, and several organ/cello pieces by living composers\, including movements from Serban Nichifor’s “Requiem For Ukrainian Martyrs\,” composed in 2022.  A varied and colorful program spanning over three hundred years that pairs perhaps the most beloved string instrument with the organ\, and for a selection of early music\, the harpsichord. \nThe church’s harpsichord was built in 1980\, and an anonymous donor gifted it to the congregation in memory of Dudley Williams. Given Dudley and Juanita’s longtime connection with the symphony and the Stamford community\, it is wonderful to share it with a wider audience. \nOrchestra Lumos sponsors a series of concerts around Fairfield County\, and First Presbyterian Church is one of their chosen locations. \nGeneral admission tickets are available through their website. \n$35 Advance Purchase \n$40 At the Door

SUMMARY:Fish Pipes at 30 Celebration Concert
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of our Visser-Rowland organ’s 30th birthday\, the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford\, also known as the Fish Church\, welcomes guest artist Michael Hey in concert. This event will be open to a limited capacity in-person audience\, as well as live-streamed for those watching from home. \n  \nFirst Presbyterian’s pipe organ stands as one of the largest pipe organs in Stamford and among the most prominent organs in Fairfield County. Built by the Visser-Rowland company of Houston\, Texas as their opus 87\, this was their first large instrument on the east coast. Eastman School of Music professor David Higgs performed two dedication recitals in June of 1991\, and Indiana University professor Marilyn Keiser recorded a nationally-distributed CD soon after. 1991 also saw the first of our annual Brass and Organ Christmas concerts with the New York Symphonic Brass. Come celebrate with us! \n  \nDescribed as “flashy” and “exciting” (The American Organist)\, concert organist Michael Hey has been increasingly visible on U.S. and international concert stages. Michael has performed solo organ recitals at Lincoln Center (New York)\, the Kimmel Center (Philadelphia)\, the Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.) and Davies Hall (San Francisco). He graduated in 2014 from The Juilliard School where he received both his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in organ performance under Paul Jacobs.  Within one year of his graduation\, he was appointed Associate Director of Music and Organist of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City\, where one of his first major tasks was to play organ for Vespers and Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Madison Square Garden for the first U.S. visit of Pope Francis In September 2017\, Michael received first prize in the First Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Organ Competition. In 2019\, he performed solo recitals for the NYCAGO and two regional conventions for the American Guild of Organists. He also performs duo recitals with violinist Christiana Liberis. for more information on Mr. Hey\, and to hear several of his recorded performances\, visit michaelhey.com. \n  \nClick here to download the Concert Program. \n  \nGET TICKETS\n  \n
